This is not a very popular museum but is definitely a one that needs more recognition. This museum houses a collection of the 20th century Russian Art and also temporary collections of historic Soviet artifacts. It was started as a non- profit organization in 2001 and opened to the public in 2002.

The initial funding came from Raymond and Susan Johnson who contributed a large portion of their collection of Russian artifacts to the museum. At this time they put up their displays in a rented corporate office and only showcased Realist- style paintings and 19th century paintings from the Soviet Era.

Later in 2005 the museum was relocated and situated in place of the former Mayflower Church and the area was also more convenient than before. It was now that the exhibits and gallery also expanded and focused on several other areas of Soviet Union and Russia. The museum has gradually gained importance but deserves more no doubt.

  • Stunning, unique space with exhibitions from several eras and walks of life that I would not have imaged when it comes to Russian art. Staff was courteous, just wished they or volunteers were a bit more accessible to learn more about the exhibitions that wasn't discussed in the little didactic wall panels. Overall though fantastic and would suggest discovering for yourself.

  • What an amazing place! I was so surprised to see a Russian Art Museum in Minņeapolis! It is located in a former church building. The museum layout is very efficient and the collection, though not huge, was chosen with a great deal of taste. I enjoyed the visit very much and I will certainly visit again!

  • Very quaint little museum. We especially liked their gift shop with complimentary hot tea, authentic souvenirs, books, music, chocolates. I suggest that you check what exhibits are currently on, as they change regularly.

  • Fun museum full of modern art and historic pieces. I loved the walkway above the main gallery. The staff are excellent and the location is an easy walk to a great restaurant and a garden center. A must see if you are in Minneapolis!

  • Being Russian myself and after reading some nice reviews my girlfriend and I decided to visit the museum/gallery on our last day in Minneapolis. The museum isn’t that big - two floors of exhibits with a museum store attached which altogether will take around 1-1.5 hrs to cover. The museum barely represents traditional and classical Russian art and should have the word “contemporary” in its name as it represents modern Russian/USSR artists and their art (mid 20th century to present days). If you’d like to learn more about Russia and its historical heritage and culture I would not recommend this place. There is no artwork from the 18-19th centuries which were the golden age of Russian art. Long story short - if you’re a fan of contemporary art it’s the place for you, otherwise I’d recommend to pass or you’ll find the museum store more exciting than the exhibit itself.
