About Cathedral Ciudadela, Minorca

The Cathedral of Minorca is a church situated in Ciudadela, Minorca. It was built on the orders of King Alfonso III, the conqueror of the island. The cathedral was built on the premises of an old mosque and the construction for the same started in the year 1300. The original cathedral was built in Catalan Gothic style. Over a period of time and a few wars later, the main facade of the cathedral was rebuilt in the year 1813 in neoclassical style- a stark contrast to the original gothic style. A stunning feature within the cathedral is the marble altar with its stain glass and its marble throne.
