Minsk Zoo opened its doors in 1984 and has been a very popular juvenile tourist attraction since then. It currently houses more than 450 species of animals. Some of the animals are lodged all year round but different seasons see special collections of animals. In its initial years, the founders often brought injured or living in miserable conditions. A lot of the animals here are natives to Belarus, but the animals that the zoo took care of and healed also found a home here. Not just animals, there are plenty of birds that are found in the menagerie as well. This can be credited to the fact that the zoo is located on the banks of the Svislach river. The location and the protective tree cover all over the zoo have attracted a lot of winged-visitors. Kids are likely to understand more about the native animals of Belarus as well as some of the foreign species of leopards, lions, owls, eagles, swans and ducks.
