This is a Monterey not-so-hidden surprise! But we’ll get to that. So, extending 1700 feet out into the bay, this pier is super popular among fishermen. Publicly accessible during the day, it’s when you properly venture out onto the pier that you see who it really belongs to sea lions in the hundreds, basking on the rocks, flopped out and lazing in the sun. Also easily visible are rookeries, otters and harbour seals. On the water you’ll find a bunch of egrets and pelicans. There’s a nice collection of tables over looking the water we encourage you to have a picnic there. It’s great place for families and romantics alike.

You can actually replicate this same experience, albeit with more dining options, at the Old Fisherman’s Wharf, which is only a short 10 minute walk away by foot along the Recreational Trail.

  • I use to go fishing off this pier with my dad when I was little, nearly 40 years ago. It was quite rustic back then and the scenery was of run down warehouses. Die hard scuba divers launched out here. Now, aesthetically, it's more inviting for tourists and family. Though a new upscale restaurant opened up, it still has a feel of the old fishing and diving ambiance. It's a great place to take leisurely stroll and look out to the bay.

  • Nice walk out to the water and to see all the sea lions sun bathing at the end of it (behind a gate, of course)

  • This are was beautiful in March. The flowers were well bloomed and the weather was wonderful. It was very cool to check out the Coastguard Pier, where fishing and diving in calm seaweed forests is allowed. The walk around the area was very serene. We went down to the tide pools and found a lot of seaglass along the Rocky shores. The seals were basking in the sun on the larger rocks and allowed for awesome pictures. Very enjoyable area. I went to see Salvador Dali painting and ended up taking a very relaxing hike around the beach side.

  • Loved the pier. Saw lots of otters and sea lions. It’s a big hub for the Coast Guard, remember to respected their missions and stay out of their way.

  • Tons of sea lions jumping over waves, best if by kayak
