This is pretty much everyone’s favourite beach in Monterey. It’s a little way out, but completely removed from the crowds. The sand is white and the water is blue. The flowers blanket the area around the beach, and they dazzle in spring. The view is spectacular and the water dangerous; seriously, your kids may love this beach, but keep them away from all but the shallowest part of the water the surf is rough here. You’ll spot wildlife aplenty whales, sea lions, sea otter, dolphins. All in all, beach is a wickedl rugged family experience… and it’s almost always quiet enough to share a romantic sunset. Nearby, you can find the Garrapata State Park, which has lots of nice wildlife and view points.
And happily, there is also free parking.

Garrapata Beach Reviews & Ratings
This is a fantastic beach. Easy to access (no parking lot but you can park along the road), and well maintained stairs. The view is breathtaking and the white sand is gorgeous. The beach is perfect to play for big kids, with small caverns on the cliffs, and and even a river. Only bad thing: we did not find any public restroom. Garrapata Beach is definitely a must-see!
Gorgeous secluded beach, and relatively easy and short hike. The beach is gorgeous, as beautiful as more busy beaches around Carmel. But, it was very quiet with just few people around. The sound of tides and the silence creates perfect place to relax, meditate or have quite fun time with family. Plus we traveled with a toddler and appreciated the ease of access.
Nice beach. A bit of a walk to beach through an “unofficial” path. The stairs would have been easier.
Not a big beach comparing to other northern California beaches, but very beautiful coastline rock figures and very fine sand. Of course walking on it you will find famous gorgeous calla Lily valley. Walking on sand and up on the cliff are both enjoyable as on land you see lots of wild flowers and the purple ones smell so good. Roadside parking, come early to avoid weekend traffic.
Very beautiful waves and near CA 1 HW , its a must visit beach when you go Big Sur
