The museum organisation has one simple purpose two preserve the best of Californian art from the 19th century to present day, and to promote contemporary Californian art through exhibition. Through educational programs, lectures, workshops, curatorial tours and public events, this organisation does a good job of keeping up California’s artistic legacy.

Among the prominent artists showcased by the museums are: modernists such as Gottardo Piazzoni, Francis McComas and Margaret Bruton; landscapists such as William F. Ritschel and Armin Hansen; the impressionists E. Charlton Fortune and Evelyn McCormick; and early painters Jules Tavernier and Raymond Dabb Yelland. The photographers showcased here include: Edward and Brett Weston, Ansel Adams, Imogen Cunningham, Wynn Bullock and Henry Gilpin. The museum also showcases non-Californian photography.

A further Asian section displays art from China, Korea and Japan such as textiles, snuff boxes, woodblocks, jade, ceramics and netsuke.

This is only one of the two Monterey Museums of Art (the works are somewhat evenly distributed among the two), though the other, located on Pacific Street, is not far off. This house has the additional acclaim of being host to the silent film stars of the past, and is today a popular place to host weddings, meetings and special events. Turn of the century elegance, serene rose gardens and child friendly activities make this place a hit.

La Mirada Monterey Museum Of Art Reviews & Ratings

  • The museum was great overall. But I must say in the process of doing my civic duty and picking up some recyclable goods outside some hoodlums had left I was yelled at by the curator. Turns out what I was cleaning up was intended to be art. Either modern art has become an inside joke or maybe the "curator" was just one of the many homeless / schizophrenic population that hangs out here .

  • Lovely little museum with ever-changing exhibitions of more-modern-era art forms, mostly from California artists, and mostly paintings. The front room functions as a gallery for regional artists’ pieces.

  • Small quiet and gallery-like Art museum. Staff is very friendly. ~45min

  • Wonderful, albeit small, show in the Marble gallery of Californian women artists. The E. Charlton Fortune paintings were worth the admission price alone. Seeing the amazing Ritschels up close was a great experience. Unfortunately much of the space in the museum was dedicated to a terrible show of David Hockney prints from images done on an Ipad (no, really). For those of us who only get to Monterey only so often, it would be terrific to be able to see more of the museum's fantastic collection of local painters on a regular basis. The area has such an incredible artistic history.

  • A wonderful stop in Monterray. The Dali exhibit was wonderful and they had a music/ paint night in the lobby. Lots of different events hosted at this place. My favorite spot to wonder about while soaking up the selection of art. Will return again
