Chiesa del Gesu is a romanesque church, home to the Society of Jesus for centuries in the historic centre of Leece. The construction of the church started in 1575 to welcome the Jesuits who arrived in town the year before Bernardino Realino da Carpi, who died in Lecce in 1616 and was later canonized. The ancient church of St. Nicholas of the Greeks of the Greek Orthodox rite stood on this site before this church was constructed. Four chapels are interconnected in the interior part of the church, and the beautiful altar of San Bernardino is the highlight of the place. Various frescoes depicting important Christian events beautify the church.
