Reserva Bosque Nuboso Santa Elena, Monteverde Reviews

Google+
  • Went for 7:30am guided walk with a group of 8 tourists. We saw hummingbirds, black guan, tarantula. The forest is beautiful. The trails were not crowded, except around the lookout tower. After the guided walk, we explored one of the other trails on our own. The guide was good at spotting birds and very knowledgeable, but the level of explanation was sometimes a little basic for natural history enthusiasts like us.

  • Less crowded than Monteverde. My friend and I enjoyed our hike through the reserve. Make sure to take good hiking shoes/ boots because the trail is muddy.

  • I can't compare Santa Elena to Monteverde. We chose Santa Elena to be away from huge crowds of Monteverde. We paid our fee and hired a good guide on the spot. We saw: tralantulas, wild pigs and beautiful flowers and plants. No Quetzal sightings, but we did heard one. Many other birds were found. We took a taxi in and shuttle (leaves a closing time) back to our the main city street (3$ a person). The hiking is not at all challenging. The scenery was nice, but not amazing on a sunny day.

  • Good people. Great work with locals. Good feeling of eco-stewardship.

  • Our guide's parents were part of an American group of Quakers that moved to Costa Rica in the 1950s and began a conservation of the rain forest program. We saw tarantulas lightening beetles fireflies and the venomous green tree snake.
