Umpherston Sinkhole - Review

The natural wonder of the sinkhole which is forged from millennia of acidic groundwater is an extraordinary thing to discover. It was created when the top of the chamber fell on the floor of the cave and it was ideal to turn it into a ‘sunken garden’. It is one of the Australia major tourist’s attractions and all those who visit Mount Gambier must visit here especially with their children.

Umpherston Sinkhole, Mount Gambier Reviews

  • Absolutely fantastic. Really enjoyed visiting here. We walked both right around it and down into it. Have a few seats and a very nice picnic area. Wandered around a good 20 minutes. Definitely recommend.

  • Definitely worth a look if you’re in Mount Gambier. Essentially a huge hole in the ground with a beautiful garden inside it. Pretty unique and in town so it’s an easy decision to make the stop. A good place to take family and safe for small children which is great as well.

  • I don't think a lot of people know about this place. It took us by surprise of how beautiful it was! And it was very nice to visit a place without a lot of tourists. The place was very well maintained and there was information about how the sinkhole was made which was very interesting!

  • Visit during the day and admire the beautiful gardens. Enjoy a picnic with BBQ facilities, table & seating, toilets nearby. Visit at night time and feed the possums that live here. Surrounding park is well maintained with history boards and sculpture. An awesome place to visit

  • Amazing site with a fascinating story. This is a sinkhole into which a lovely garden has been developed. While there are good overviews from the surface, you really need to descend into the sinkhole to get the full effect, and this does require sufficient agility to manage the descent. However once you are there you're in for a treat! Recommended.
