This church is a hidden gem. It’s walkable from the 5 train terminus and a great glimpse of history from the Revolutionary War. This church switched sides several times and also served as a hospital. The groundskeeper and staff were extremely friendly and gave me an extended private tour of the buildings and grounds. Really need structure and classic gravestones in the cemetery. More people should take advantage of the history reachable on the MTA!
Great little National Historic site honoring the revolutionary war and the community that grew from a settlement of 10 family farms in the early 18th century. The church was centered in, what at the time became the village green. Today the area is mostly Industrial, so the church is a great reminder of the local history that has since been lost. The museum/visitor center is small but has some great dioramas of the battle of Pell's Point and the early colonial and revolutionary history of the community. The Junior Ranger program is well organized around exhibits on the visitor center, the interior of the church itself, and the cemetery. It is easily accessible to all and the rangers are very helpful if the kids get stuck.
Great historic place! They have interesting and educational events. The staff is very friendly and the director is very nice and knowledgeable.
Not the first place one would expect to find an NPS site but then again our history is everywhere and St Paul's Church is filled with some of the founding history of our country. This location is truly fascinating and worth a visit. You do not need to plan to be here for more then a few hours but you do need to be prepared to take your time and take in all the different learning opportunities this site has to offer. From the movie about the roots of the church to the ranger led visit inside the church itself, you can truly get a deep appreciation of how this site placed an intergral part in shaping our country. The cemetery is a truly beautiful tribute to a number of famous and not so famous individuals from the area. The monuments are beautifully crafted. The little known fact that an unknown nber of Hessuam soliders buried in one grave at the site is just one of the many secrets that lies within the cpnfindes of the property. St. Paul's Church is definitely worth a visit and for the kids in your group the Junior Ranger Program is a great way to bring history alive. The site is free and some areas are ADA compliant but the cemetery may be difficult to for some people with mobility issues.
Interesting but parking is very limited in industrial neighborhood.
