This monument is dedicated to the King Mengrai, the great king who founded Lanna Thai Kingdom. He was originally the ruler of NakhonHiranNgoen Yang, an ancient town off in Chiang Saen. He extended his kingdom to nearby states and Chiang Saen was one of them. It was in 1296 that he successfully established his kingdom with his power centered at Chiang Mai. Many tourists visit this monument to pay their respects to the ancient king and to get themselves clicked for the photographs.
