The Kala Ghoda stretch can be roughly categorized as the stretch from the Southern end of Mahatma Gandhi Road, going up till Mumbai University on its northern end, with Oval Maidan to its west and is adorned with Lion Gate to the east. The name Kala Ghoda has actually derived from an equestrian statue of King Edward VII. This statue was placed at the centre of the then Esplanade Road. The statue, a mere memory of the colonial area, has been taken off from here but the name Kala Ghoda has stuck ever since.
Today, the area is known to be the perfect hub of cultural activity and boasts of various important institutions like the Jehangir Art Gallery, Bombay University, the Museum, National Gallery of Modern Art, Max Mueller Bhavan , Bombay Natural History Society, Elphinstone College, David Sassoon Library around it and Institute of Science all of which can be explored on foot. You will also come across a host of designers, restaurants and cafes in this area which make the area so lively. The biggest highlight though of this Art District is the Kala Ghoda Festival which happens in February and is the best place to find artists, musicians and craft persons under one roof.
