Mount Mary Church - Review
As a follower of Roman Catholic faith, the Mount Mary Church is the oldest one in the entire Mumbai, in Bandra. It has a beautiful statue of the Virgin Mary made of pure basalt. Regular prayer takes place and many Christians across the Mumbai throng in the church to join the prayer. This five hundred year old church has a inscription on its wall called, 'The Basilica of Our Lady of the Mount'. On the coast of the Arabian Sea, the church is located amidst natural vegetation.
A myth that the church has healing abilities exists. Many people who are suffering from incurable diseases come to the church with a waxen figure of the disease in the hope of getting cured. The famous Bandra Fair which is celebrated for a week is perhaps the church’s most famous aspect. The beautiful view of the sunset in the evening from the church also makes it a popular tourist destination. Daily Confessions take place in the church inside secret cubicles. The interiors of the church are old and the unique style is worth nothing. There are many shops outside the church selling pictures and idols of the Virgin Mary. Many handicrafts are sold which reflect the Marathi culture. The scenic beauty adds the earnest devotion of the pilgrims in the right proportion.

Mount Mary Church, Mumbai Reviews
Mount Mary Church, also referred to as Mount Mary’s Basilica, stands atop a hillock in Bandra. Overlooking the expansive Arabian Sea, this beautiful church is visited and re-visited by countless devotees and tourists from places near and far. Although the present building is around 100 years old, the history behind the statue of Mother Mary dates back to the 16th century. Jesuit priests brought this statue from Portugal and built a chapel. This small basilica was later renovated to its current semi-Gothic form, which does fascinate every onlooker. The church is popular for a week-long festival of Mother Mary in the month of September. It is an ideal place for peace-seekers and those who love to explore Colonial architectural.
The reverence and sanctity of the devotion to our lady of the mount is lost. The faithfuls approaching the path to the church are shunned and ordered by the cops to go round about. Even senior citizens and the weak are not spared. After going all the way round about, families are separated into two queues, male and female. Family members can get lost in the crowd. Please avoid visiting the basilica during the feast week. It's 10% worship amidst noise and chaos, and 90% commercialism. The special altar erected outside the church, has become a podium for public for clicking photographs. The altar is supposed to be a holy place of worship, but all and sundry goes on top of the alter for taking pictures. This was brought to the notice of a priest standing nearby. He looked at the altar and the people desecrating it and to my surprise turned a blind eye. It's shocking and disgusting.
Love to visit this church anytime. So peaceful, so silent. Just going there and sitting for a while...talking to ownwelf is so rejuvenating. And visiting it during the feast period which takes place every year in the first week of September and lasts for 8 days, gives this place a must visit tag!!!
One of the most iconic places in Mumbai. It's a must visit place and of historical significance. Many movies have been filmed here. Though I am a Hindu, I frequently visit this place. It's very peaceful inside. Offer candles in shape of affected organ or body part and you will surely get relief. Highly recommended place. I have posted few pictures. Hit like if you find my review helpful.
