Poor security experience. I was peacefully standing waiting for relatives to get visa, phone in my pocket. A security guard calls me, asks me if I have a relative inside. I said yes, the guard then asks to see pictures on phone, I thought he wanted to identify me so I can help my relatives inside. Then he snatches the phone away from my hand and checks all the pictures- asking if I was photographing the consulate. I was not but only after he looked thought all pictures and videos on my phone, he gave my phone back. I would like to bring it to attention of concerned authorities that it is ridiculously easy to photograph and video tape the consulate premises. Also, there are many high rises around this building. The security should be meaningful than asking a random passer by for pictures on the phone (which I really hope you are doing, since I am a USA citizen of Indian origin). If you are really concerned about photography of front of the building, build a wall that is tall enough. There are dozens of pictures on google of this place already (that includes the sign of photography not allowed - mocking the "security" of this place).
A first class facility in the new business district of Mumbai named BKC. A superb library , friendly staff , and a great Commercial Service for India USA business promotion. In the recent past , the Consul generals have themselves been very accessible to members of the business community which augurs well for us India trade Relations. Probably one of the most modern American consulates anywhere in the world.
The consulate complex has all essential facilities including drinking water, toilets, a snacks counter (which I think, is over-prized. However, it is cheaper than CCD/Starbucks). Try to reach around 15-20 minutes before your scheduled appointment. If you reach too early, you might have to stand in hot sun (depending on the time of the year and the time of the day). Avoid carrying the restricted items, which includes mobiles etc., to the place. If you cannot avoid carrying them, there are unofficial lockers available outside. These are NOT endorsed by the consulate and should be used at your own risk (I didn't try). The complex is also disabled friendly. You will spend around 1.25 - 1.5 hr from the time you enter the complex and leave. There is a pay-and-park building close to the Consulate office (I haven't used it). Tips regarding the Visa interview can be found by doing a simple Google search.
Was done with the visa process in 30 mins alongwith standing in queue. Go with someone as you cannot take any electronic equipments such as laptops and phones inside.
The consulate is neat and clean. The staff is professional and fast. You need to reach 10 mins before your appointment. You are not allowed to carry anything except your own body, if you want to carry bag, cellphone, etc bring a friend with you to keep it with him. They are very strict about these things so consider it before going. You are most likely going to get the visa unless and until trump bans indians. Good luck.
