These are Buddhist caves or monasteries where monks practiced their austerities around the first century AD. And unlike the artistic extravagance of Elephanta, they are spartan and bare. Situated in the heart of Mumbai's National Park, the complex co
Enjoy this half-day trip to Sanjay Gandhi National Park from Mumbai. There you will explore the Kanheri caves - an important testimony of ancient monastic life of India and thanks to its convenient trade-route location, occupied continuously since th
Explore the wonder of Kanheri Caves and experience the rise of Buddhism at this 2000 year-old settlement. With rock-cut carvings, old living quarters and stairways chiseled into the hill, the caves are flooded with astounding relics from the 1st cent
You will visit the Kanheri Caves comprising of viharas (monasteries), chaityas (halls) and dwellings and were used by Buddhist monks between the 1st century BC and 10th century AD as part of a monastic university complex.
Nature. Calmness. Silent Jungle The best of all of this and right within a city. Ideal days to visit , Mon to Fri. Best to avoid Saturday and Sundays ( especially ) and public holidays too. Cycling, Walking, Running, Crossing Kanheri Caves and climbing the mountains/trekking through the jungle to reach on the top. This place has been my best place to go with friends or just myself. Have been coming here for more than 12 years now and it only keeps getting better every year. If you love nature, this is the place to be.
Worth going once or twice ..... Prefer weekdays or morning on weekends if you want to enjoy safari otherwise you will end up wasting time in waiting for safari bus. Visit Kanheri Caves, and ride toy train and boat ride. Good place for family picnic. But not worth visiting more than once as it has very high entry fee and you up keeping as well as infra inside the park is very poor. Even garden and child play areas are not maintained.
Average. Nothing much to see around if you want to see wild animals. The animals safari is just like a zoo as the lion and the two tigers were fenced in a small area so that they can be seen by visitors. What i liked about the park was the deers given the freedom to roam around and if you are lucky they will come close to you :)
Amazing place to spend the whole day at peace. Don't forget to get your own packed/ home made food as very limited choice (fruits, samosa, etc) of snacks is available here. Could see 2 lions in the safari.
Excellent place to have a good morning John or cycling (avoid weekends or holidays). The caves are a sight to visit. Monsoon is a good time to visit (prepared to get drenched). If you wander a bit away from the beaten path, you can spot some beautiful flowers, variety of birds, very good spots for basic rock climbing.
