The Majestic Thoovanam waterfalls beckons you with its spectacular view. Whether you are a tourist or a nature enthusiast the attraction to these falls is magnetic. Deep within the Chinnar Wildlife sanctuary lies the mighty Thoovanam water falls. The river Pambar flows eastwards through the sanctuary and forms the waterfalls. The enormous waterfalls on the Chinnar River, makes you gasp with its silvery cascade. It is truly an unforgettable experience to the visitor.
This magnificent marvel attracts tourists from far and wide. As a part of wildlife tourism, the Wildlife Department has guided trekking from Karimutti Forest. The trek takes you to Thoovanam waterfalls. Trekking through the pristine scrub forest offers advantage of watching wild animals and rare flora. Venture deep into the forest and witness many endemic and rare species. The flora and fauna enrich this dry and deciduous forest.
The trekking trail to Thoovanam Falls begins at the Alampatty forest station. Purchase your tickets for the trek, trekking without a ticket is not permitted. It takes about an hour to reach the base of the fall. Watch animals like the Langurs, a long-tailed arboreal Asian monkey with a characteristic loud call. Be aware of elephants crossing the road and ponder on the matriarchal hierarchy of the herd. Get inspired by the giant Malabar squirrel, endangered species, living on the edge yet in complete harmony. The water is one of the major sources of drinking water for animals within the sanctuary.
There are a number of sandalwood forests, and is the only place in Kerala where natural sandalwood forest is present. Processing of sandalwood and its associated oil forms part of local economy. Sandal wood is a parasitic tree having a fragrant and close-grained yellowish heartwood. Sandalwood oil, also known as ‘liquid gold,’ is extracted from the roots and wood of sandalwood. Thoovanam Falls can be visited at any time of the year but after the monsoon, this place is paradise.
