The Battle of Mykonos was a minor naval engagement fought in the main harbour of the Cycladic island of Mykonos on 17 June 1794 during the French Revolutionary Wars. A British Royal Navy squadron led by fourth rate ship HMS Romney was escorting a convoy of eight merchant ships westwards through the Aegean Sea to Smyrna when the French frigate Sibylle was sighted at anchor in the harbour of Mykonos town with three French merchant ships. Ordering the convoy to continue with the rest of the squadron, Captain William Paget diverted the 50-gun Romney to the port and demanded the surrender of the 40-gun French ship and its convoy. The French Commodore Jacques-Mélanie Rondeau refused Paget's demands, and prepared to defend his ship. After some manoeuvering to ensure that the town was not within his firing arc, Paget brought Romney alongside the French frigate and for an hour and ten minutes the two vessels exchanged broadsides at close range. The engagement was hard fought and both ships suffered heavy casualties, but eventually the greater size of the two-decked Romney told over the smaller frigate and Rondeau surrendered. Sibylle was subsequently commissioned into the Royal Navy and in 1799 participated in a celebrated battle in the Indian Ocean against the French frigate Forte.

  • One of the best known bars where you could see the sunset by little Venice. This place used to be the place to be for drinks and cocktails after the beach and where you could stay dancing and drinking untill late. Now seems to has lost some of its vibe when it re-opened under new management. Still worth enjoying a drink or two.

  • Was the best place to go to in the off season, warning however, it is €10 a beer! Loved the vibe and the music.

  • CAPRICE Mykonos Town (+30 22890 23541) The beautiful people have been coming to Caprice in Little Venice for twenty-five years. It's the oldest and hottest bar on the island.

  • I can't begin to describe the horrendously bad meal we had here. Octopus on Grill was like leather, cold and very TINY and the cost of it was 24 euro. We paid €92 for a meal that was shockingly bad then an hour later had to go to Kiki's Tavern (the best food on Mykonos) NEVER AGAIN!!!! When we complained to the waitress about the Octopus she just shrugged and said it was what we ordered - COLD from Grill!. At that stage I was fuming and just wanted out of the place. Crammed in like sardines, rude service and €92 for 2 courses. I wouldn't mind paying that if the meal was good but this was horrific. I wish I could give them no stars to be honest. Don't Go there.
