When you are exploring the city of Nagano, there is one place that you cannot miss- the Zenko-ji Temple. Situated in the heart of the city this place is Nagano’s number one glory. The most impressive thing about this temple is the underground passage which is devoid of light and you have to make your way through the dark and find a key that is hidden on the wall. According to the legend, anyone who touches the key has a blessed life. This is an absolutely fantastic place for anyone who loves the temples and loves to meditate in presence of nature. A great spot for sightseeing you can also channel your inner shopaholic self on your way back.

Zenko-ji Temple Reviews & Ratings
Beautiful place. The view from the tower is real nice (albeit a bit pricey) and there's a bunch of neat foods and souvenirs in the streets surrounding the temple. Crowds aren't too bad, either. Solid place to spend a few hours if you're ever in Nagano.
You can't possibly miss this temple when you come to Nagano. This temple is very much a must-go spot and there are several shops by the streets for one's enjoyment. There are events hosted every year, be sure to look them up.
The zenkoji temple is in a beautiful place, walking before arriving at the temple, you come across several streets with restaurants, shops, hotels, it’s a worth exploring space, entering the temple to a pair of wooden guardian statues wonderful, no The temple contains a statue of Binzuru, a physician who was told to be Buddha's follower. Visitors to the temple touch the statue in order to cure their ailments, inside this place where the statue can’t take pictures. One of the most beautiful temples I've visited, try going to some temple event🤩😍
Be aware, you MUST take your shoes off in quite a few buildings! To be safe, assume it's every building and watch what other people do before entering because in one of the main buildings, signs in English weren't there...so don't just walk straight in! The entire complex is pretty big so give yourself at least 2-3 hours to fit everything in. A 1000yen ticket gets you into 3 of the more important buildings, just look for the ticket machine and select English if your Japanese isn't so good then produce the ticket per building for a stamp. It's a well thought out place, very beautiful but please respect the zero photos indoors policy. Don't make yourself look like an ignorant foreigner!
This is one of the most beautiful and oldest temples in Japan. Well worth visiting and walking through the small streets outside the gate. Try coming late at night for a unique look and feeling.
