It is said that Baichung Bhutia is the first footballer who played in European League and was also the captain of the national team. It is because of Baichung, the game football became popular in Sikkim. Hence, in order to promote this game the Government of Sikkim decided to make this stadium. Today the stadium has a capacity of 30,000 seats.
