Les Machines De L'ile De Nantes - Review

If you are looking for innovative and unique tourist sites, you cannot give a miss to Les Machines de I’lle de Nantes. It is the quirkiest sight of Nantes, taking you to a journey to a future world. All thanks goes to the makers, Francois Delaroziere (La Machine) and Pierre Orefice (Manas association), who had such an innovative idea to re-create a warehouse of a former shipyard into a magnificent artistic park. A step into the park takes you to the ‘imaginary world’ of Jules Verne and ‘the mechanical world’ of Leonardo Di Vinci.

The park has 3 sights:

  • The Great Elephant – a mechanical elephant of 12meter high giving you a tour for 45 minutes.
  • The Marine Worlds Carousel – a huge carousel of 25 meter high, featuring 35 underwater moving creatures on three levels.
  • The Heron Tree – it is 45 meter high steel structure, topped with two herons.

  • Go early in the am and do the carousel first to receive discounts for the gallery then do the gallery and elephant. Mid week and early and queues aren't a problem. With a picnic and arriving at 10 you will be completed by 4. Grand elephant is impressive. Also opposite Jules Verne museum. Dogs can walk around the complex but can not go in or on them so you need one person to wait just outside the ride or gallery. The elephant you can simply follow.

  • The Machines are so hyped and mentioned so many times in must see, must do lists, that it has become a victim of its own success. There are 3 separate, paid activities here: a visit to the Galleries which allows the visitor to see working models destined for the Herons Island project, including a flying heron, a walking ant, an inchworm and a spider, each with seating for 1-3 people. A few lucky people get to ride these models while about 100 spectators watch and listen to the (lengthy) explanations, which are entirely in French. There is no formal seating. This was not worth the price of entry. The second activity (separate charge) is to ride the huge elephant, which holds 50 passengers and has 3 routes. This slow ride lasts 30 minutes. It has shade and seating. Riders can move the tail and cause the elephant to trumpet. The elephant also sprays water at spectators and riders. This ride is usually sold out days ahead. The third activity is the 3-level carousel featuring various creatures. There is a smaller carousel for toddlers. There is a slight discount with the purchase of one of the other tickets. Again, the Machines are very crowded and expensive. The personnel are busy working on their Heron Island project, rather than improving the current visit.

  • The elephant was fantastic to watch parading around. We got there early on Sunday morning and headed for the carousel. It was so quiet that they gave us an extra ride. It really was fantastic. There is a Spanish galleon moored on the other bank of the river. The tour around the gallery is all in French, so although we saw some of the machines move, we didn't really understand the explanations by the guides. Allow about three hours. Can't wait until there are more machines around and for the Heron Tree to be competed.

  • Great place for families and adults. Kids love riding the Elephant. Be careful, it sprays water out of its trunk! The line gets long quickly. It is good to go early, or get your tickets with the expectation of waiting a few hours ( which is fine because you can visit the other machines, get a snack, and play in the surrounding areas.

  • An excellent and unusual experience, we definitely want to visit again. Being from the UK we felt it was good value for money. There is paid parking opposite and the staff speak English. Such an incredible mind that created these machines! A definite winner if you're a steampunk fan.
