Built in 1850, Sankaty Head Lighthouse stands as the witness of the Nantucket’s wonderful history at the port of the island. The lighthouse was first automated in 1965 and since then it has been operating to the present day. While the lighthouse offers picturesque views of the sea and the old port, driving to this itself is a scenic journey. In addition to all the historical laurels, sankaty Head Lighthouse is also regarded as one of the first lighthouses that received fresnel lens, the French-designed compact lenses especially for lighthouses.
