Built in between 1954-1957, Monticello dam is a 93 m high arch dam in the Napa county, California state. The huge dam is responsible for the creation of Lake Berryessa, which is currently one of the largest man made lake in world. The dam is a beautiful sight to behold and offers tranquility and peace of mind once there. The prime reason to attract tourist to this place is the spillway, also called ‘The Glory Hole’ which is built to drain the water when the lake reaches high levels. The spillway has an opening diameter of 22 m and narrows down to 8.5 m at the exit. The water spiraling down the spillway is just spectacular to watch and isn’t a phenomenon that one can witness frequently. However, the sight isn’t captivating just when it’s flooded. It is equally interesting when the water levels are low since you can see the remains of the old Monticello town. The dam was built by erasing the whole town allegedly using two huge bulldozers that were chained together. Visit this attraction to spend a few hours in peace and quietude.
