About Stag's Leap Wine Cellars, Napa

This popular wine cellars was established by Warren Winiarski in 1970 and took its name from Stags Leap District of Napa Valley, California. However, after that it was sold to a joint venture initiated by Chateau Ste. Michelle of Woodinville, Washington, and Marchesi Antinori Srl of Italy for $185 million in August 2007. Today, it is one of the most sought aftare places to visit in Napa. This winery is a perfectionist piece of art in the sense that Warren Winiarski established it after a year-long trip to Italy studying the work of Niccolò Machiavelli. Stag's Leap Wine Cellars, Napa Reviews

  • Delicious cabernets representative of the Stags Leap AVA--a southeastern foothill region that basks in the afternoon light. The Fay is more approachable and fruit forward, the SLV more tightly wound and structured, the Cask attempts to blend the best characteristics of both. Recent vintages (drought/semi-drought years) have all been stellar. Though the '13 Cask received a near-perfect 99 RP and is therefore scarce (arguably a "greater" vintage), the '12-'15 vintages across the board are all very good. Price point is in line with well-known Napa cab producers as you're paying for the provenance (a Shafer Hillside Select from the same region will still run you $50-100 more vs. a Cask 23). Their claim to fame was the 1976 Judgement of Paris, along with Montelena's chardonnay, beat out similar French wines; also briefly featured in a wine manga called the Drops of God ;) There was a lot of worry after this place went corporate and sold out--some charm is gone, but the wine has not degraded. Not the best of Napa views as you're generally staring at a lifeless rock, but the close proximity to the vines does immerse you a bit in the terroir--which is further highlighted by the Fay and SLV. Generally friendly hosts if it's not too busy of a weekend. Stress and tensions may run high however if you're fighting the crowd (then again just like other wineries in Napa, or Disney Land). Reservations at least a week in advance is recommended, and required for larger parties. Go for the experience and collect for the provenance. Just don't buy the Artemis here because it's cheaper at Costco.

  • Amazing wines. The hostess/sommelier ran us through the wines and was awesome.

  • To Bob, Carla & Samantha: THANK YOU!! What a well-rounded event with Stag's Leap Wine Cellars! The team greeted us with wine in-hand and a view in-sight! We were IMMEDIATELY blown away by their hospitality. Their renovated tasting room is just gorgeous! Even the restrooms are jaw-dropping! You must have Carla take you through the wine hallways and hear the story of The Pendulum. It's lovely, absolutely lovely! The presentation of space & courses at dinner were so impressive. I wish it was my space to sell!

  • Great wine tasting. Purchased three of our favorites and a couple shirts.

  • They promise you the beautiful experience but I feel like it's a little bit overpriced because you can go somewhere else for half of the price just as good of quality on the one in like Charles Krug have the same experience and buy that one and at the same price or less and you don't have to pay so much to go in.
