Piazza Del Mercato has a long history from its beginnings as a commercial center. It is possible that it was also a market place in the ancient Roman times. However, it also has a rather bloody history and was used for public executions at one point of time as well. The first of which was of Conrad a boy-king of the 13th century. Between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries it was the focal point of several protests and uprisings.

Although it has washed hands of its bloody past the legacy and the stories still remain. Today however, it is a wonderful market square where you will be able to find fresh produce as well as souvenirs and handicrafts made by local craftsmen. It is a great experience to walk around the mercato square and enjoy its sights and sounds. The Church of Sant Maggiore and the Basilica Sanctuary of Maria Maggiore are some of the landmarks of the place. Designed with true perfection by Cosimo Fanzago, both the fountains here are simply spectacular.
