Originally there was a 4th century church here called the  "la severiana", after San Severo. But in the 9th century, after the valiant sacrifice of a soldier in the battle against the Lombards, this church was built and renamed. It’s not the prettiest of Naples’ churches but there is a 13th century wooden cross, a Byzantine painting, and most important relics of St Severus. There is a Palaeo-Christian apse from the original church too, a very rare thing, as well as Corinthian columns and arcades.
