Most people undertake treks to reach top of the hill, a journey which is not meant for the faint-hearted. There are a number of temples which also dot the landscape, making Brahmagiri a pilgrimage spot. The hills are quite famous as they have been mentioned in quite a few mythological documents.

The legend goes that a cow was unintentionally killed by Saint Gautam as he was trying to chase it away. After the incident, he prayed to Lord Shiva to allow the Ganga to flow through to cleanse him of his sins. Lord Shiva was quite impressed with his devotion and allowed the Ganga to flow through as the River Godavari.

In 1908, 500 steps were added to make the hills more accessible to the general public. One can also spot a few wild animals during their ascent.
