About Pandavleni Caves, Nasik

The Pandavleni caves are a group of 24 caves which were carved between the 3rd and 2nd Century AD. This is definitely a beautiful place to visit. There are quite a few mountaineers and trekkers who frequent the place, especially during the early morning hours. There are steps which lead to the caves. However, some caves are interconnected by stone-cut ladders. While some caves are quite large and possess a few chambers within, there are some which are smaller and intimate. The main cave or the ‘Chaitya’ (prayer hall) is the best of all the caves as it has a beautiful Stupa located within.

Interesting sculptures can be found within. In fact, these viharas served as the meeting ground for a group of Buddhist disciples who would share sermons and meet one another. There are water tanks which have been carved out of the solid rock – a reason why the site has an excellent water management system.

  • Beautiful ancient sculptures and caves allows one to enjoy photography. There are various trails to go on top along with a complete traverse from the mid height gives a pleasure of trek and exercise as well. While going on the top, couple of small rocky patches gives some thrilling experience as well.

  • Oh Man. Take some water and then go up the stairs. It's a good hike. Stairs that are made for giants and stupid. Not maintained well. Still a good lesson for history. 1000 years old structure.

  • A visit to Pandavleni takes you in a time before time. It makes one wonder how with very little tools man could carve out his dwellings. It is maintained by Archeological survey of India, who has a small office at base and a ticket window near leni. One can take stairs or climb uphill trails. The monument is in excellent condition. There are 28 caves with brief history about each cave written on boards, mentioning when it was built and by whom. It's a one of kind national treasure. Must visit.

  • Asowe place... Good climate... No pollution... Full of natural beauty... Reflecting changes in Buddhist devotional.. These caves are one of the oldest caves of Maharashtra. The site has an excellent ancient water management system... Wonderful place..

  • Amazing view of Nashik city. The serenity in the caves where the monks meditate years ago. You still experience the same if you sit quietly in the caves for a while.
