Dating back to the late 18th century, Fort Fincastle is named after Viscount Fincastle (also known as lord Dunmore) who constructed this fort to protect the Nassau harbour from pirate attacks. Nassau has a notorious history with pirates and this fort keeps this very history alive and breathing in the city’s present day.
The fort takes the prime location on top of Bennet’s hill- the highest point on the island. Once upon a time the fort had the capacity to hold and operate 68 cannons- not even one of which was ever used! Today, its shape that resembles a paddle-steamer, stands tall as one of the most iconic and picturesque structures around the city.
The limestone used to make this fort was extracted while carving out the famous ‘Queens Staircase’- a highlight in itself. Don’t forget to take some time to admire the rustic staircase and enjoy the panoramic views when you reach the fort!
