Junkanoo World Museum & Arts Centre is one of the prime haunts for avid art collectors and admirers. For those who don’t know about Junkanoo festival, here’s a small brief.

No one truly knows about the origin of this festival but it is believed to belong to West Africa. The festival is said to be named after John Canoe, an African tribal chief who wanted to celebrate with his people even after he was brought to West Indies during the period of slavery.

The whole festival falls in line with Christmas and even today, its sheer bright coloured costumes, lively energy and percussion and brass music form a highlight in the Bahamas- something that people from all around the world come to see. The traditional instruments consisted of conch shell and horns among others and the crepe based costumes that move with the dancers, grabs your eyes right away.

The museum and arts centre pays tribute to this very spirted festival and showcases the history of the festival along with selling exclusive merchandise that you can gift to loved ones. When here, do splurge on the hand-made Bahamian craft and décor articles.
