If you love architecture and history, a walk around the Parliament square welcomes you with buildings that were built in the early 19th century by the Loyalists. The designs of these buildings are quirky and rather colourful compared to other traditional buildings around the world. The eye-catching flamingo pink government buildings at the square were inspired from New Bern in North Carolina.
The square accommodates the most important buildings in Nassau on its three sides- the Georgian neo-classical buildings painted in pink and white, the Assembly House (that consists of the Prime Minister’s office along with 2 Parliamentary houses namely the Lower House of 38 members and the Upper House of 16 members) and the Senate Office that faces the Bay street. The entrance of the Senate house on the square is occupied by a beautiful statue of Queen Victoria that dates back to 1905 and was erected here in the Queen’s honour after her death in 1901.
The Supreme court buildings are also located here. Fun fact- in honour of the history of the court, the judges here still wear traditional British wigs and robes for the hearings!
