The Caves of New Providence were home to the Arawak or Lucayan Indians- the original inhabitants of the Bahamas that lived here from the 10th century to the late 15th century. It is believed that the cooler temperature of the caves made storage of food easier for the Lucayans and protected them during harsh weather. Post the arrival of Columbus, the place was constantly inhabited by pirates who would hide their treasures and arms here in the caves secretly.

Located 6.6 miles from the West Bay Street, the gorgeous limestone caves look like they are straight from a movie. The caves were formed by the action of waves millions of years ago across the carbonate and limestone sediments and were original found at the level of the sea! Today, the caves spin a story of their own with surreal location that juxtapose against the modern and colourful building of the Bahamas.

When here, don’t forget to search for the initials of Prince Alfred- the Duke of Edinburgh, carved into the stones by the Duke himself on his visit to the islands in 1861! You can also find a British flag hoisted here to commemorate the event. History aside, the caves are loved by nature lovers and hikers who don’t mind getting dusty and want to explore the many wonders of the Bahamas.
