Named after a well loved and known midwife, the district of Natal where she worked was renamed in her honour. The lighthouse was erected in 1951. As tall as 120 feet, the only downside to the lighthouse is its location. Since Mae Luiza, the midwife, was recognized for her work with the poor, the lighthouse is in the relatively unsafe neighbourhood of the city. If you feel uncomfortable about seeing the lighthouse from within, just drive by it; it is after all, an important landmark of the city.
