One of the two main marble statues in the city, the kouros of melanes is located in the Flerio area of Naxos and considered to be one of the top attractions around. Visiting the place, you will find a free standing stone figure of an unclothed man of a large stature. The statue was evidently one of the most challenging projects of that time, a project that remained unsuccessful. Built in 6th century BC when there weren’t any machines to carry these heavy sculpture, the statue shows the duress suffered by quarries of those times. The place is replete with remnants of quarrying activity- wedge slots, rectangular wedge holes, chisel, marble rubble and more. Those who are interested in history can spend a few hours here and try to understand the lifestyle of those time. The statue surely gives an innate peek in the past.
