It is perhaps the most frequented and admired attraction in the city. The reason is quite simple- the place has a chunk of history, art and culture to it, adhering to its centuries-old legacy and mystique. The place is actually a ruin of Apollo’s temple, the god of sun & light, that casts a dramatic frame of ancient collonaded against the blue of the sky. It is built on the small rocky island of palatia near the harbour and stands as the reminiscence of the old culture of Naxos, which was then the trade centre of the region. The only remain of the monument is the huge marble gateway which is also the reason for it being named Portara (huge door). It only takes a few hours to visit the place and it has a lot to offer in terms of intrigue and story. Ensure to come if you are truly interested in the tales of ancient Naxos.
