Brown, sturdy planks of wood tied together with tautly, supported by a strong wooden foundation and complete with pier and thatch. Sounds like any other beach side bar, doesn’t it? Only this time, it’s in the middle of the ocean!
Floyd Forbes, the creator of Floyd’s Pelican Bar, really took a gamble when he decided to build his unique little bar. Inspired by a dream, he would take wood and other building material on his boat in order to create a little pleasure island out in the chest deep waters day after day. The bar was finally created and proved to be a perfect place for peace and relaxation for him and his buddies, where, after a long, tiring day of fishing, they could meet up, drink beers, fry fish and relax. Soon, the bar became popular with tourists as well, with local hotels encouraging visitors to visit the special floating pub.
The journey to the Pelican Bar is as pleasurable as the destination, with scenic beauty all the way from Negril past the Black River Falls. The journey will take you an entire day and when you finally reach the Treasure Beach, a number of fishermen will be willing to take you out to sea and into the bar. Along the way, you might be lucky enough to see dolphins swimming aside your boat or even a sneaky croc! Here, you can lounge around in the sun with the local patrons, grab a few cold drinks and take a dip into the waters which will be just a few steps away from you. You can carve your name into the wood and ask the staff if they’d be willing to you fry you up a freshly caught fish. After swimming in the clean, blue waters, feasting on tantalizing, home cooked Jamaican flavours and chatting with the other equally relaxed and laid-back patrons, maybe even Floyd himself, you can make your way back on the boat and head back to Negril.
