Embracing the downtown area of New Haven, Chapel street is home to some of the oldest heritage buildings around the city. The Chapel Street historic district covers an area of around 23 acres and is currently listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The area is demarcated by the Yale University in the North and the Dwight Street Historic District in the west. You can find a sea of 19th and 20th century buildings here that have Late Victorian architecture- from Townsend Block (1832), Union League Club (early 20th century), Warner Hall (1892) to The Oxford (1910), Cambridge Arms (1925), Trinity Church Home (1868), The Taft Hotel (1911), the Trinity Episcopal Church and the Yale Repertory Theatre.
The best part about the district is its ambience and you can pretty much see New Haven’s history in a nutshell here. Travel back in time and see these beautiful buildings as you walk through the Chapel street or simply come to admire the architecture and take a few photos. Since it is the downtown area, the street does offer the best hangouts of the buzzing city. Don’t forget to stop by at one of the many restaurants and cafes for a quick bite or a delicious meal.
