With a string of awards under its belt (including the Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theatre, a number of Pulitzer Prize, New York Drama Critics Awards, the Margo Jefferson Award for Production of New Works and Obie Awards) the Long Wharf Theatre has played an important role as a non-profit regional theatre in New Haven. Even today, the theatre maintain its repertoire as a main performing stage for some of the most prominent plays and pieces in the world.
The theatre was founded in 1965 by on Jory and Harlan Kleiman on the location of a warehouse. The seats were borrowed from a rundown movie house and the first performance of Arthur Miller's ‘The Crucible’ was run here for two weeks! Today, the humble theatre has come to form the backbone of the performance pulse of the city, showcasing some of the most popular Broadway shows like The Gin Game, Hughie, American Buffalo and The Changing Room. Some of the best actors have graced its stage including Sam Waterston, Brian Dennehy, Judith Ivey, Stacy Keach and Anna Deavere Smith.
