A symphony orchestra was not stranger to bigger cities in the 19th century that had a huge population since the orchestra required opulent donations and a number wealthy patrons to sponsor them. However, New Haven was considered a small city with not many prospects of having its own Symphony. Morris Steinert saw the potential in the city and along with the help of the head of Yale’s Music school, the New Haven Symphony Orchestra had its first ever rehearsal in 1894! Over the years, the orchestra graced the city with many performances and concerts backed by its tremendously talented 70 musicians. Some of the biggest collaborations of the orchestra have been with Yo-Yo Ma, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Joshua Bell, Renée Fleming, James Galway, Glenn Gould, Itzhak Perlman, Mstislav Rostropovich, Artur Rubinstein, Emanuel Ax and Gil Shaham.

You can also catch their performance in the Classics Series at Woolsey Hall and the Family series at Davis Street School in New Haven. If you love classical music, missing this show is not even an option!

New Haven Symphony Orchestra Reviews & Ratings

  • Saw the Music of Queen Show at Oakdale this Saturday night and wow awesome job and outstanding. the place was rocking and everyone I talked had a great time. Didn't realize what to expect as far as a full band plus orchestra but it was fun. Always wanted to see Queens heavier tunes played to an orchestra and it was like heaven.
