This Cathedral has a lot of history, a functioning church and a school, but the real draw for the average man is impressive architecture, gardens, beehives, sculptures, and boasts two resident peacocks that roam the grounds. It houses many diocese offices and a restoration department. St. John the Divine is better known as the author of Revelations in the Bible. Regardless of your denomination or creed, this place is worth a visit!
I am sensitive to spiritual enegries since few years ago. Like visiting places like this. They improve my mood and give something you can call a spiritual boost. Great place for everyone seeking answers, running from solitude or looking for God in any way possible. Of course I'll put a 5. Especially like the exterior of this place.
A beautiful building! Plan on taking some time when visiting. Take in all the detail of the artwork. Free to come in and worship but they will hit you up for a $10 "donation" to walk around and explore. It is money well spent as I cannot imagine what it must cost to maintain this beautiful structure.
I've seen cathedrals all over Europe and the US and this ranks amongst the best, but in a truly New York way. I missed the annual blessing of the animals and took advantage of the NYC open house day. I took the C train to 116th in Harlem and walked through the Park to arrive, but you can reach it on the 1 as well. Look at every column, glass, statue and piece of art, you'll be surprised and inspired. I was able to use my debit card to make a donation and at the gift shop, but bring cash for the Hungarian Pastry Shop across the street.
One of the largest gothic cathedrals in the world. Amazing architecture. Stroll the grounds and visit the peace fountain, an intense sculpture next to the church. Check the schedule for concerts and other cultural events.
