Governors Island is 172 acre land situated very close to Lower Manhattan and even closer to Brooklyn. Initially used as a military camp, this island is now looked after by the government and is open for activities for the public. Although it is not open all year round, when it is- it offers various open spaces to the public to have a great time. It is being constantly worked upon and 30 new acres were made accessible to the public in 2014. There are various things to do here and if you happen to visit during the working season, then you should definitely make it a point to visit there.

Governor's Island Reviews & Ratings
Amazing place! Love the island! The ride there is so smooth and the ride only cost $3!!! That’s amazing! The island is a great place to get away from the city for a day! Would recommend biking on the island! Overall an amazing experience!
The island is a nice little getaway from the bustling city. Lots of green space to roam around in, great views of lower Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty. There are food vendors. There are also bathrooms with running water. Very short ferry ride from Manhattan. The ferry leaves from the terminal adjacent to the Staten Island Ferry.
My husband and I took our two grandchildren 7 and 5 year old boys to this beautiful Island at noon. The grounds resembled to a college campus on a holiday. We loved Castle Williams and its history, watched an exciting Unicycle hockey game, had a small lunch @Island Oyster overlooking the amazing views of lower Manhattan enjoying fun music. We want to come back to explore more but earlier during the day.
We've loved it every time we're had the chance to get on that ferry and zip our way on over to Governors Island--what a blast! There seems to always be something wildly creative and supremely imaginative going on over there--smack-dab in the middle of the fabulous East River! We look forward to every chance we have to make it own--and it is specially fun to rent bikes and cruise about the island!
I really enjoy the park. Recreation. Biking. Art. History. Theater. A gem of a National Park just a 6 minute ride from the Battery! The Governor's Island ferry leaves from the building directly east of the Staten Island Ferry Whitehall terminal and on weekends also from Brooklyn.
