About Rue La Rue Cafe, New York City
Rue la Rue Cafe is a Golden Girls themed cafe eatery located in the Washington Heights neighborhood of the New York City borough of Manhattan. The restaurant was conceived and is operated by Michael LaRue, a close confidante of one of the four "Golden Girls", Rue McClanahan (1934–2010) while McClanahan's son Mark Bisch is a partner. La Rue, who inherited many of the star's personal belongings, in turn decorated the restaurant with them (including her 1987 Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series), as well as pictures of McClanahan (one each from the decades of her entertainment career) and other memorabilia related to the hit show. The establishment is coincidentally located inside the Sofia storage building. Touchingly, there is a plaque reminiscent of a star on Hollywood Boulevard "which reads "Thank You for being a Friend" fitted into concrete at the front door outside under which are some of McClanahan’s ashes. The boite takes its name from the part of both the late actress' and the proprietor's names which is shared. The dining establishment features a menu which is heavy on fare referential to the program, with cakes dedicated to the stars including; "Dorothy's salted caramel cheese cake" in tribute to the ornery senior citizen who was portrayed by Bea Arthur on the program, the coconut "Betty White cake" dedicated to the wholesome Golden Girl Rose Nylund, "Rue's Orange Poppyseed Cake"(taken from the entertainer's own recipe), and "Sophia's cure for depression cookies" honoring Estelle Getty's role on the program as the grand dame of the crowd who as the mother of the character Dorothy was one generation older than the other three gals. Currently the Cafe is open for breakfast and lunch. The only living Golden Girl Betty White was scheduled to attend a ribbon cutting ceremony at the cafe, but as yet this has not transpired. So Ms. White has not yet been presented with the quiche to the city. It has also been reported that the café has received permission from the Walt Disney Company to produce and sell their own Golden Girls merchandise.Wikipedia

One of the most darling and special cafes I have ever been to! This is definitely a destination you want to check out just for fun. Even if you're not a huge fan of Golden Girls, the cafe is so charming. Come here with your friend and get a champagne split and a share a slice of cake while watching Golden Girls in a fun space. What could be better than that? The coffee is great, the food is amazing but a little pricey. The service is phenomenal! This neighborhood is so lucky to have this cafe located here.
I wish I could do a separate rating for ambiance and food. If you are a Golden Girl's fan, this is AMAZING. The relics and theme throughout appear as a museum. If you want to dine here for a meal, I would strongly recommend against it. You will be safe with a dessert or coffee but anything from the menu such as the tomato soup that was essentially marinara sauce for $13 or the tuna melt that was directly from the bag, I would choose to eat somewhere else.
Small and quaint, the staff was helpful, the coffee good and the food excellent! I loved the clam chowder and my friends loved the quiche and salad. They even tolerated my crazy kids! I would definitely come again when I am in town
Wonderful cafe!! Great food, gorgeous and fun decor, and the owner Michael was so friendly and attentive. He made me feel so welcome. I had the quiche and the key lime pie. Both were fanastic. And the coffee was great. I live in Texas but am lucky enough to have family in the neighborhood. I highly recommend Rue La Rue. I cannot wait to return again and again. They made me feel like a friend!!
As soon as you pull up in front of this business it looks like a high end cafe. When you enter you're greeted by good aromas. The employees are charismatic and very respectful. The coffee and bagels were great. I would definitely come here again thank you for making my morning. The decorations are just gorgeous. I'm speechless about this place.
