The Corona Del Mar State Beach literally translates to “the crown of the sea” and is a 30-acre area that was a popular surfing spot till the 1930’s. With the construction of the jetty and its extension, “The Wedge” was formed that gave the surfers beautiful high waves and protected the Corona from the massive swells of the sea.

It was at this beach that Duke Kahanamoku rescued people on his surfboard when a vessel turned over into the ocean during high surf. Today, the beach has become an iconic part of Newport. Come here to see the vintage cottages and houses, walk on the streets that are named after flowers, dine at any one of the restaurants that swarm the place, explore quaint spots with live music and witness avid surfers from around the world come here to ride the waves.

Spread a picnic blanket and get cosy on the golden sands to get a tan or simply lay back to see the pacific ocean change colours as the sun sets. The laid- back feel of the beach with buzzing nightlife hotspots and good music is best explored during summers. If you are game for it, try the beach boot camps arranged at the beach.

Corona Del Mar State Beach Reviews & Ratings

  • I just took a family vacation and stayed in the Point Break house rented through Grand Welcome Vacation Rentals. The house was beautiful and the location was to die for...entire house had ocean views and was steps to sand. Phil, the Property manager was awesome anytime I needed information or help with anything. Had amazing stay...

  • I have loved this beach and its surroundings. It's not crowded, and it has good waves. There are beautiful and unique houses too. We went in August so there was a lot of algae. The water temperature was amazing though. The distance to get to the beach itself is perfect (not as in Santa Monica or other LA beaches where you'll walk a lot on the sand before touching the water)

  • Great beach. No hard boards (surfing). Large paid parking lot - or street parking with a downhill trek. Jetty and bluffs to climb around on. Designated swim zone beyond the wave break. Friendly and fantastic life guards. Snack shack and showers. Limited fire pits. And on a nice summer day, it's totally packed.

  • Enjoyed! Since I have not been back for 30 yrs! Very busy, come early! Parking is crazy, But nice view. Get too see the boats that come out from the marina. Swimming was awesome!! Nothing like salt water cleansing your body. Felt so good, relaxing. Enjoy the beach.

  • The waves and water are really nice when warm. Just be careful how close you are to where the wave crashes- twisted a muscle cause I was too close. The beach is really beautiful and has a great snack bar. Also, there are plenty of shells in the shallows. Just be aware, there are a few stingrays here and there.
