St Nichols Russian Orthodox Cathedral - Review

The St Nicholas Orthodox Cathedral, or the Russian Orthodox Cathedral of Nice is a Russian Orthodox house of God of the Moscow Patriarchate. It is spotted in the city of Nice. Opened in 1912, on account of the liberality of Russia's Tsar Nicholas II, it is renowned as the biggest Russian Orthodox basilica in Western Europe. From 1931 until 15 December 2011, the area that included the basilica was part of the Patriarchal Exarchate for Orthodox Parishes of Russian Tradition in Western Europe under the governance of the Church of Constantinople.

The church building, sancified in December 1912 in memory of Nicholas Alexandrovich, Tsarevich of Russia, was intended to serve the vast Russian neighborhood that had settled in Nice by the completion of the nineteenth century. The dedicated guests from the Imperial Court were also included. Tsar Nicholas II supported the development work through his association with financers and he had largely provided the funds for the construction.

  • To visit this beautiful Orthodox Cathedral, it’s best to have shoulders and head covered for women (you can borrow a scarf from a basket by the entrance). Men are advised not to wear shorts. It’s very beautiful both inside and outside. To visit during the service is a lovely experience. You can check their website to learn what’s on.

  • Stunning cathedral. Well worth a visit. Entrance on the outside is for free. There are a few benches around to chill and admire the building.

  • A cool church that you really should visit if you are interested and have time for it. It's situated in a small garden with a café and a few tame bunnies which made for a really relaxing atmosphere! The only downside was that it was forbidden to take pictures inside the church.

  • The outside is beautiful but the inside not so much. But definitely worth a visit!

  • Beautiful orthodox church, full of reperts, icons and a lot of art. A place full mistic atmosphere, with a lot of visitors, that let people find his interiority, and suggest spiritual research. Also beautiful the exterior park, where turits can visit more interesting reperts.
