Byzantine Museum - Review
You have the Makarios Cultural Foundation to thank for this museum – a rich collection of Cypriot Byzantine Heritage, the richest such collection in the country. It’s small though, only 220 items or something but that’s more than enough considering how important all the pieces are. There are precious icons (mainly from the 12th century when the art was the most popular), Byzantine art, sacred vessels, books, and beautiful 6th century mosaics.

Byzantine Museum, Nicosia Reviews
The history of cyprus unfolds within the museum walls through rare artefacts. Go through the lives of the refugees from Asia Minor in the dedicated section of the museum, which holds a unique collection of personal items contributed by those families. Marvel at the Byzantine art that has been copiously saved from the occupied territories and from the hands of illicit dealers!
Museum has multiple areas, bizantine religious art, contemporary art and folk art. Also there you can find very beautiful architecture. On the ground floor is an amazing collection of icons from 10 century to present, which represents many icons and artifacts from churches at the Nicosia area. Many of them have a scars of interetnic war that caracterise history of the island. Contemporary art gallery have 15 - 16 century paintings made by students of the that time in few styles of French, Spanish and autohton schools. Unfortunately is not allowed to make a photo, so is nothing to show here. Is a must to visit.
It a time. to see and a time.to be. I invite. you to see. these icons!
The collections in this museum are WONDERFUL. There are so many beautiful icons! The best parts are the reconstructed dome-mosaics and frescoes though, absolutely stunning. Also impressive displays on how these were stolen/illegally trafficked from the northern part of Cyprus. However - the museum itself is a bit old-fashioned. Interpretation options are not great and it is unclear where to go/what parts to see, etc.
