The street, unimpressive though to look at, is highly significant to the local population. The street was actually called the Murder Mile for a while in the 1950s when British military personnel fell target to nationalist forces. Various streets including Ledra were blockaded in 1963, as hostilities between the Turkish and Greek Cypriotic communities escalated. This blockade was known as the Green Line. After lots of negotiations and hullabaloo over four decades the blockade was finally removed in 2008. Now the road is a standard shopping centre but with a twist. On one side, it’s all European goodness and on the other, all Islamic spirit. Both sides are markedly friendly though; a lifetime of war and conflict must have begun to wear on them.
