Lake Chuzenji - Review

A creation that dates back to 20,000 years ago, the Lake Chuzenji is one of the most striking features of the Nikko National Park.

A result of Mount Nantai erupted lava that further blocked the river. Sprawling across a whopping 11.62-kilometer square with a circumference of 25 kilometers, this enormous lake is a must-see in Nikko for several reasons. The lake is like a painting in the fall months!

Surrounding this attraction are the many hot springs of Nikko and two of Japan’s best waterfalls - Kegon Waterfall and the Ryuzu Waterfall. The circumference of the lake makes for a great hiking adventure. You can even take up a sightseeing boat to get more of Lake Chuzenji’s beauty!

Lake Chuzenji, Nikko Reviews

  • Must spend more time here Amazing lake. Only got to spend a few minutes driving past it on the way to the hotel and back however would definitely recommend spending a lot more time here as the scenery is amazing.

  • Lake Chuzenji is located at the starting point of Oku-Nikko. About 20,000 years ago Mt. Nantai was erupted, and this lake was formed by the lava during that eruption.  Currently the lake is with a circumference of about 25km and a maximum water depth of 163m. From Meiji era to the early Showa era it has been identified as one of the best summer resorts especially by foreigners and because of it's serene and calm atmosphere. The idyllic lakeside which spreads at the foot of Mt.Nantai, we can enjoy the beauty of the nature in all four seasons, especially the early summer azalea flowers and colorful autumn leaves are impressive. It is a great recommendation to enjoy the beautiful natural scenery from the water by taking a boat ride. In autumn season special boats are operated as autumn foliage course to enjoy the beauty of changing colors.

  • Beautiful nature around this lake. I recommend to visit to escape from the crowded Nikko shrine and temple area.

  • The colour of the lake is very pristine and intriguing. It is very breathtaking when it is seen from Mount Hangetsu. You can visit it in 4 different seasons because it has four different looks but you should visit it during autumn because it will be the most beautiful in that season.

  • You must come! Enjoy the different for every season. Also the way is very interesting! The lake is fantasy! OMG I wish go there again!
