Want a break from all the shrines and waterfalls? Head to the heavenly tranquil Nikko Tamozawa Imperial Villa Memorial Park.
This is one Nikko attraction that promises Zen like none other! The ex-residence of Nikko’s then emperor and his wife, this residence accommodates a whopping 106 rooms and immaculately clipped lawns and gardens that also included a cherry tree, apparently dating back to 400 years!
The corridors of this once Emperor’s-residence are where you will find some striking intricate carvings representing eras of the Edo, Meiji and Taisho periods. The surrounding areas offer a blissful walk besides a Rocky River valley. The whole experience is sure to take you back in time.
The Nikko Tamozawa Imperial Villa Memorial Park lies at a very close distance from another one of popular Nikko attractions, the Shin-kyo Bridge.

Not particularly amazing for the 510 yen entry fee. Just a nice house and garden, which you can give a miss if you're tight on time and have seen other Japanese gardens. Thought the history of the place might've been interesting, but guess not. Also saw a number of stinkbugs on the carpets throughout the villa, so look where you step! It was fall when I visited.
A lovely palace. I have spent nearly 2 hours inside this place and still wanted more time. The garden outside was quiet and a joy to walk. Inside a great example of Japanese x European architecture.
Largest imperial villa wooden complex in Japan. Lovely to visit and walk around. Nice garden. Was not too crowded. Staff were cheerful and helpful as well. Highly recommended if you come to Nikko.
If you enjoy Japanese history and architecture, you will enjoy it. It is a big place with 106 rooms and 2 gardens. You can see how the imperial family lived. A bit anyways, as they don't have all the furniture. We loved it, but it really depends on what kind of things you enjoy.
I highly recommend seeing this beautiful villa! The staff is very friendly, and almost all information is in both Japanese and English. The entire villa is made of wood and they include information on the craftmanship necessary for the building process and the decorations. For 510 yen you can visit the inside and the garden, from which you have some beautiful views on some of the rooms. I think I spent about 45 minutes there, but I really enjoyed it.
