Built in the year 1955, the Pitsford Reservoir was built with an aim to supply drinking water to Northampton. Spread over 181 hectares of land, this park is open at all times. Four streams enter the reserve and their surrounded areas are converted into large bays of shallow water. These waters serve as an excellent feeding and sheltering ground of the wildfowl. During summers, the levels of the waters drops, and the water basins are colonised by many unusual plants, such as orange foxtail, mudwort and golden dock. During winter this place turns into a large ground for the most conspicuous birdlife. Some of the birds seen here are wigeon, gadwall, pintail and teal among many others. Home to more than 10000 birds, a visit to Pitsford Reservoir is a must.
