How to Reach Nuwara Eliya


  • By Air: All international flights land at Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake, 30 kilometers from Colombo. Most of the major airlines have flights to and fro. Nuwara Eliya is further 180 kilometers away from Colombo. There is no airport transfer service from the Airport to Nuwara Eliya. Best is to hire a cab.
  • By Train: There is no train to Nuwara Eliya. Trains are available from Colombo or Kandy to the nearest railway station, Nanu Oya as Nuwara Eliya doesn’t have a railway station of its own. The Colombo-Kandy-Nuwara Eliya stretch has one of the most scenic and spectacular views.
  • By Bus/Car: There is a bus from Colombo to Nuwara Eliya via Kandy or Hatton. Both the routes promise breathtaking views. On the Hatton route, you might not be able to find a connecting bus, and will have to wait for another bus to take you to Nuwara Eliya. If planning a trip by Car, try the Hatton route as the road is less busy, and the climb isn’t very steep.


Nuwara Eliya is a small town, and almost everything is within the walking distance. Transportation in Nuwara Eliya will be easily available near the Post office or the Cargills supermarket. Transport to any nearby place as well can be easily found at these places.
