Parroquia de San Juan de Dios or the Temple of San Juan de Dios is the oldest temple in the city of Oaxaca. It dates back to 1521 and its first priest was Juan Diaz. It is widely considered to be the first Cathedral of Oaxaca, and a seat of strategic importance. In the year 1662, a massive earthquake destroyed it. It was funded by and reconstructed by Oaxacan philanthropist Manuel Fernandez de Fiallo. Subsequently a hospital and a convent were added to the complex and it operated smoothly until a fire destroyed it in the late 19th century. Now, it is a building of great historical significance and attracts historians and devotees from near and far.
